Prologue

Lilia brushed a strand of hair out of Rion's face.  Tears fell from her
face to his.  He looked soinnocent sleeping like this, incapable of death and
destruction.
No, she mentally reminded herself.  He's not sleeping.  He's
dead...
Lilia saw something sticking out of Rion's belt pouch.  She was
surprised to see it was her old doll that she had not seen since she had left it
in the shed.  Lilia was surprised that Rion stillhad it and wondered if it had
meant something to him.
Suddenly overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness, she
put her head in her hands, pushing the dollup against her face.
It still smells like him... she realized.
The doll had a scent of wind, rain, and a little bit of salt to it.  She smiled through her
tears, remembering just how many times they had gotten caught in the rain.  She was sure
that the memory was real, no matter what Cain had said.  It made her angry that in his last
moments, Rion was worried if he was the "real Rion."

"I know you're the  real Rion," she spoke quietly.  "I can sense Galerians..."

Lilia's voice trailed off as she stared at Rion's closed eyes.  His mouth
was slightly open, justlike when he slept.  She laid his still body down gently on
the floor and bent down.  Her lipssoftly touched his, tears flowing down her
face and channeling down the sides of his face.

"I love you, Rion," Lilia whispered.

Footsteps sounded outside the door, and Lilia jumped up in
surprise and fear.  Guards entered theroom, looking ready to take her out.
There was no running.  She was cornered.

"Let me go!" she screamed in protest as one grabbed her.  The guard's response was a sharp
blow to her head with a metal pole.  She felt electricity surgearound her body as she lost
consciousness.  The last thing she felt before she blacked out was Rion's warm

hand.
